A favorite question people ask me is, “How did you get in the lawn mower business?” It all started one spring day in 1977 when my dad and I purchased a couple of riding mowers for use on our personal property. We had been using walk-behind mowers and thought the riding mower would be a nice step-up in our lifestyle. We went to a local power equipment dealer and bought two mowers right off the showroom floor. There was no test mowing or product demonstration. After a few weeks of mowing with our new riders, Dad, my brother Dean, and I began to compare our experiences and we realized we had made a bad mistake—the new mowers were not an improvement over the walk-behind mowers. If only we had had a demonstration of the mower on our property, we would have never bought them. But that gave us the idea and challenge to build our own mower to see if we could improve the design and make a mower that would work better on our property. Our saying at the time was: “If you can’t buy it, build it, and so we did.” In a few weeks, we had built our first prototype Walker Mower and the rest is history.

Based on our experience (as shared above), we learned a long time ago the importance of having a mower demonstration on your own property. “Try before you buy.” Having a great experience at a dealership or doing some test mowing on someone else’s property is no substitute for having a demonstration on your property or a property you know well. As the manufacturer, the last thing we want to happen is for a customer to purchase a Walker Mower and be disappointed. The best way to avoid disappointment is to get to know the product and experience it on your property. There are so many features and benefits offered by the Walker Mower that are best appreciated during an on-property demonstration.

From the beginning, our “sales with service” marketing program with our distributors and dealers is organized for potential customers to request and receive a mower demonstration on their property. We also extend the demonstration offer to existing Walker Mower owners who want to try some of the new products being introduced. For example, you may want to see how one of our newest mower deck designs performs in comparison to your older model. Simply put, our demonstration program is an important part of making sure Walker Mower customers are delighted at the time of purchase and continue to be delighted throughout the lifetime use of the product.

Sincerely,
Bob Walker
